The distinct and powerful vocals of Chris Robertson has always been the driving force behind Black Stone Cherry’s signature sound. Now 12 years on since the fresh faced quartet first released their debut album, they are proving why they are the standard bearers for the new wave of rock.

The southern rock outfit embrace their Kentucky roots in their scintillating new album aptly titled Family Tree. Released just in time for the summer weather, it is the perfect album to accompany a BBQ or a road trip with the top down (or windows open if you're not that posh). Okay, maybe a tad optimistic about the summer weather in the UK, but you definitely get the vibe of wanting to enjoy this one in the company of friends due to its feel good nature.

This album flows perfectly track to track, mixing the tempo but never letting up in rocking southern blues inspired riffs and sing along choruses. The singles ‘Bad Habit’ and ‘Burnin’’, which are the first two tracks on the album, set the high standard for what you can expect from the rest. Stand out personal favourites include the rifftastic rockers ’New Kinda Feelin’’, ’Get Me Over You’ and the blues drenched ‘Dancin’ In The Rain’ featuring the legendary Warren Haynes. These tracks require volume for the full effect!

Picking out just one favourite has proved a difficult task because they are all so good, but I think every Black Stone Cherry fan will agree the anthemic ‘My Last Breath’ is a wonderful and soulful example of what this band has in their repertoire. The theme, as the album title suggests is family, and this track’s beautiful lyrics portray that perfectly, I can guarantee you’ll be singing it after just one listen. With its delectable blend of rock, blues, folk, country and even a dash of gospel, I think it’s fair to conclude Black Stone Cherry have brought you sunshine and smiles in 13 superbly produced tracks.

Having followed Black Stone Cherry’s career since the very start, it is evident from this album that the band have matured their signature sound into a well balanced and well perfected buzz of energy. It finally feels like the band have found their identity and its clear they have put their all into this album. There’s nothing out of place, Family Tree is hands down the best release of their career. 10/10

The band will play the main stage at this years Download festival as direct support to Guns N’ Roses on the Saturday night. Further news on UK tour dates are yet to be announced.
